Silence is a vote. Not choosing is choosing. The republic was handed to us as a question — if you can keep it.
Five things this week:
- Check your registration. Purges are quiet. Two minutes at vote.gov tells you whether the state still thinks you exist as a voter.
- Register anyone in your life who isn’t. Kids who just turned eighteen. Roommates. The friend who “doesn’t do politics.” An unregistered voter is one the machine never has to count.
- Talk about it. At the barbecue, at dinner, in the group text. Especially where it is awkward — because awkward is where silence lives.
- Watch the news. Read the record. One paper you agree with, one you don’t. And a book they are pulling from a library shelf.
- Say out loud why you are voting the way you are voting. Not slogans. In your own words: what you believe, what you fear, what you want the country to be.
